S.A.F.E. Center announces new youth group: Verify

Local nonprofit S.A.F.E. Center is proud to announce Verify (voices encouraging relationship integrity for youth), a youth formed with start-up funds from Kearney Area Community Foundation.  The mission of Verify is to raise awareness and educate their peers, as well as the broader community, on the meaning of healthy relationships. The five current group members are high school students from Kearney High School and Kearney Catholic High School.

Emily Sa’adi, Marissa Kalb, Madison DeJonge, Gabrielle Onate, and Veronica Mejia are the five current members of Verify, a youth group started in the fall of 2017 and supported by the S.A.F.E. Center to educate their peers and raise awareness on healthy relationships in the Buffalo County area

“I feel like my age group really needs to know that there is a difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships, and now there’s something I can do about it by being a member of Verify,”  Madison DeJonge, daughter of Sherri and Kelly DeJonge.

Verify aims to emphasize positive and healthy qualities in all friendships and intimate relationships.  The group focuses on the importance of knowing the signs of healthy relationships, while recognizing and addressing unhealthy behaviors.

As Verify focuses on Teen Dating Violence Awareness month throughout February, they will be hosting a free showing of “Beauty and the Beast” (2017) on Feb. 27th at the World Theatre in Kearney at 7:00 p.m.  Following the movie, the youth group will facilitate a brief discussion regarding relationship themes and messages from the movie. The doors will open at 6:00 p.m. with concessions available.

The group also wrote and starred in a TV commercial, developed a radio PSA that will air the month of February on Hits 106, as well as designed their own logo, business cards and t-shirts (available for $10 purchase at the” Beauty and the Beast” showing). You can view their website here or follow them on Facebook.

Their presence on social media, along with special events in the communities and schools, will continue to not only educate others, but also inspire more involvement in addressing issues related to teen dating and relationships in general. For questions, call (308) 237-2599 or email
